DAX40/MDAX Trend Monitor 2026: The annual report is becoming a digital platform

Date
23/07/2026

Summary:

Annual reports are evolving into digital platforms: HTML, user experience and machine-readable content are becoming crucial – not only for readers, but also for AI systems. Companies that embrace digital reports and Generative Engine Optimisation (GEO) at an early stage are ensuring their visibility and future viability

The annual report is undergoing a fundamental transformation. What was long regarded as a mandatory regulatory document is increasingly evolving into a digital information platform. RYZE Digital’s 15th Annual Report Trend Monitor uses 87 annual reports from companies in the DAX 40 and MDAX to highlight, for the first time, the trends shaping corporate reporting – and explains why companies should optimise their reports in future not only for people, but also for search engines and artificial intelligence.

Why corporate reporting needs to reinvent itself

Today, corporate reports fulfil far more than just regulatory requirements. They provide information to investors, analysts, employees and other stakeholders – whilst at the same time being increasingly used as a source of information by generative AI systems such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity. This is fundamentally changing the requirements for corporate reporting.

The DAX 40/MDAX 2026 Trend Monitor shows that, nowadays, good reports no longer impress solely through comprehensive content and an appealing design. What matters most is how easily information can be found, understood and processed digitally. User guidance, structure and machine-readability are therefore becoming key indicators of quality.

Sustainability reporting is becoming an integral part of corporate reporting

With the introduction of the European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS), it is not only the scope of reporting that is changing, but also the way in which sustainability information is presented. Companies are faced with the task of presenting complex ESG content in a way that is understandable, transparent and tailored to their target audience.

The DAX 40/MDAX 2026 Trend Monitor shows that many companies have already significantly enhanced their sustainability reporting. Structured sections, clear navigation, interactive links and well-designed landing pages make it easier to access the extensive ESRS content. Sustainability is therefore no longer viewed as a standalone report, but increasingly as an integral part of corporate reporting.

This development is also relevant in terms of SEO and Generative Engine Optimisation (GEO). Sustainability information is among the most frequently searched-for corporate content – both via traditional search engines and via AI systems. The more clearly structured, clean and digitally accessible ESG data is, the easier it is to find, categorise and use as a trustworthy source.

HTML adds value – provided it is implemented consistently

PDF remains the dominant reporting format. At the same time, more and more companies are turning to digital annual reports. Among DAX-listed companies, 67 per cent now publish an online report, whilst the figure for MDAX-listed companies is 34 per cent.

However, the analysis also shows that not all HTML is created equal. Many companies limit themselves to individual highlight pages or introductory chapters and then refer readers to the PDF. Only a complete HTML report offers the added value that digital users expect today: intuitive navigation, fast search functions, linked content and significantly improved discoverability.

This difference will become increasingly important in future, particularly with regard to search engines and AI systems. Structured HTML content can be indexed, linked and processed more easily than traditional PDF documents.

Artificial intelligence is changing the requirements for annual reports

Generative AI is giving rise to a new target audience: machines.

AI applications are increasingly drawing on publicly available corporate information to answer questions or summarise content. As a result, annual reports are not only being read, but also interpreted and cited.

For companies, this means that content should be clearly structured, semantically organised and technically well-tagged. Topics such as structured data, AI citations and GEO are therefore becoming significantly more relevant. They lay the foundation for ensuring that corporate information remains visible in AI-powered search and assistance systems.

The annual report is becoming a digital platform

With an average of 382 pages across DAX-listed companies, traditional document structures are increasingly reaching their limits. Companies are responding to this with new digital concepts: search functions, dashboards, interactive key figures, download centres and target-group-specific entry points make it easier to access complex information.

The annual report is thus evolving from a static document into a digital platform. Instead of a linear reading experience, flexible information offerings are emerging that cater to different user needs and deliver content across multiple channels.

This development also shows that the question ‘PDF or HTML?’ will become less relevant in future. Modern reporting processes are increasingly making it possible to deliver content from a central source in various formats – efficiently, consistently and across different media.

quote

“Today, the annual report is far more than just a regulatory document. It is becoming a digital platform for corporate information – and must therefore meet both users’ expectations and the requirements of modern search and AI systems. It is precisely this transformation that the Annual Reports Trend Monitor 2026 highlights.”

Conclusion

The DAX40/MDAX 2026 Trend Monitor makes it clear: corporate reporting is undergoing constant change. Digital user guidance, high-quality HTML reports and machine-readable content are becoming key success factors. Companies that take these developments into account at an early stage lay the foundations for greater visibility, higher-quality information and future-proof reporting.
