GEO in reporting – Why companies should act now

Date
16/09/2026

Generative Engine Optimisation (GEO) has long since ceased to be a niche topic. Whilst it was still treated as a peripheral aspect of search engine optimisation just a few years ago, GEO can now quickly become a decisive factor in reporting when it comes to a company’s digital visibility.

Traditional search engines organise content according to keywords, rankings and click paths. However, search behaviour has changed. More and more people are seeking answers directly via chatbots or generative AI systems that summarise information from a variety of sources. This has implications for investor relations, corporate reporting and sustainability reports: a company’s own message is increasingly being received not in isolation, but within the context of other voices and external sources.

From traditional visibility to AI-driven perception

A look at current developments shows that the traditional visit to a company’s own website is becoming less important in reporting. AI-supported systems provide answers without users even having to visit the source. This means that control over one’s own narrative is lost. Financial reports, CEO statements and sustainability achievements are suddenly in direct competition with external analysts’ views, news portals or forum posts.

Take this example: whilst a company can specifically highlight its own focus on sustainability in its annual report, this aspect is often completely absent from AI-generated responses. The source changes, and key messages fall by the wayside. This can lead to misunderstandings, particularly in sensitive areas such as financial communication.

What does this mean for businesses?

Every statement in reporting can become a building block for AI-generated responses. This presents challenges, but also opportunities. Those who do not regularly review and monitor their content and structures risk important facts being distorted or overlooked altogether. GEO-Monitoring is therefore becoming standard practice: companies should consistently monitor how they are portrayed in AI systems, which facts are cited, and where competitors are performing better.

This is because many answers generated by generative AI systems on financial and sustainability topics are not based solely on the content of the company’s website, but also draw on external sources such as press articles, Wikipedia or social media. As a result, a company’s key messages may lose their impact or be diluted in the overall picture. Only those who regularly measure these factors can make systematic adjustments.

Specific measures to improve GEO relevance

Content should be clear, rich in context and, as far as possible, phrased independently. Each paragraph should remain comprehensible even when processed in isolation by AI systems. The following are helpful in this regard:

  • structured data in accordance with Schema.org, particularly in digital annual and sustainability reports,
  • consistent use of language to avoid contradictions and ambiguities, and
  • FAQ sections that provide concise answers to key questions and are written in natural language.

Both technically and in terms of content, close collaboration is required between the Communications, Investor Relations, Marketing and IT departments. GEO is not a task for lone wolves. Responsibilities, processes and continuous monitoring are essential components.

Organisations need common standards for content, data and publication processes to ensure that information remains consistently accurate, up to date and trustworthy in the long term.

No monitoring, no control

If you want to know how your own company is really perceived in digital reporting, you need reliable metrics. A GEO dashboard provides transparency regarding current visibility in AI systems, assesses the quality of narratives and helps keep an eye on the competition. Which topics are being accurately reflected? Which narratives are gaining traction? Where do the risks lie? These questions can only be answered through ongoing analysis.

GEO is not a passing trend, but is becoming an integral part of any communication strategy. Those who take reporting seriously adapt to the new rules of the game. Visibility and trust are built where companies present themselves as reliable sources within the AI knowledge ecosystem.
