The microblogging landscape is changing: while X (formerly Twitter) is struggling with controversy and Threads is still in its infancy, decentralised alternatives such as Bluesky and Mastodon are gaining ground. Find out why these platforms could shape the future of microblogging and what unique advantages they offer for users and companies. A look at innovative features, technical differences and the potential for early brand exposure in the changing social media world.
Microblogging: fast, direct and interactive
Microblogging services have been an indispensable part of digital communication for years. They offer users the opportunity to share thoughts, news and content in a short and concise (text) form. Real-time communication gives rise to lively discussions on current social, economic and cultural topics.
Journalists, opinion leaders and experts in particular use these platforms intensively, as they promote rapid interaction and direct exchange with a broad public - unlike social networks such as Instagram, which rely heavily on visual content and algorithmic sorting of their content.
Companies use microblogging platforms such as (formerly) Twitter strategically to reach their target group quickly with time-based topics, strengthen their social brand presence and expand brand interactions within the communities.
Why many users are turning away from X and threads
Since the takeover by Elon Musk in autumn 2022, Twitter - now X - has undergone a series of controversial changes. The renaming, the decline in content moderation and the increased presence of bots and trolls have led to increasing political polarisation and the spread of disinformation. Many advertisers have withdrawnand alsouser numbers are also declining.
However, there is still a need for a social network that enables uncomplicated, text-based communication. This is why Threads, launched by Meta in the summer of 2023, initially benefited from the changes at X and appeared to be a promising alternative. However, the new platform also has its weaknesses: It is closely linked to Instagram, meaning that users cannot manage their Threads account independently. It also lacks many established functions that have characterised X over the years.
Bluesky: the decentralised future of microblogging
This is where Bluesky comes into play: the service was initiated in 2021 by Twitter founder Jack Dorsey as a side project and has since developed into an independent company with great potential.
In contrast to X, Bluesky is based on a decentralised network that gives users more control over content, algorithms and communities.
What makes Bluesky special?
- Decentralised structure: Bluesky is based on the open AT protocol (Authenticated Transfer Protocol), which makes it possible to operate different servers independently - this reduces censorship and central control on the part of the operators. Users can take their data with them across platforms or move it to other servers that support the same protocol.
- Customised feeds: Instead of having content pre-sorted by a central algorithm, users can create their own feeds. For example, a start page can only contain posts on certain topics or from favourite accounts - a welcome alternative to the algorithmised start pages of other social networks such as TikTok or Instagram.
- Intuitive user experience: The interface is similar to Twitter, but with fewer adverts, better moderation and a smaller but friendlier community.
For companies, Bluesky offers the opportunity to take on a pioneering role as an early adopter by establishing themselves on a rapidly growing platform.on a rapidly growing platform platform.
Mastodon vs. Bluesky: a comparison of two decentralised alternatives
In addition to Bluesky, Mastodon is another alternative to X. Both platforms rely on decentralisation, but differ in their technical implementation:
- Mastodon is based on the ActivityPub protocol, which is also used by other networks such as Threads. It offers a broad, federated infrastructure in which users can join different servers - each with its own moderation rules and focus.
- Bluesky uses the AT protocol, which allows for more flexible data transfer and offers more options for customising content.
One disadvantage of Mastodon is the fragmentation of the user base due to the large number of independent servers: While Mastodonhas around 15 million usersBluesky has aroundapprox. 30 million almost twice as many.
Gaining a head start
Through targeted community building, companies can build up a loyal following on Bluesky before the platform is discovered by the masses. In addition, the decentralised structure of the platform gives users more control over their content, which can promote better interaction rates on the platform in the medium to long term.
It remains to be seen how Bluesky will develop in the coming months and years. Creating an account and securing your username is free - and can be a valuable investment in the future of microblogging.
